In Ashley's Book of Knots, there is a whole section on loop knots. Ashley's goes on to say that the Span Loop is exceptionally easy to untie. He then goes on to say that the Span Loop Knot is also the strongest and most secure of the series. (Single Loop Knots). Even though the security of the Span Loop is mentioned as being very secure, I would not think that this would replace the Alpine Butterfly Loop.
