If you look at my fingers my fingers stay close to the scalp until the braid is 1/2 to 1 inch in length. The reason for this is it secures the braid at the scalp; for those who are attempting to braid their hair for the first time it is important that you practice this. And remember with time and practice this becomes second nature when braiding.
