Lisa Gade reviews the 2021 Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 (G533) high end 15.6” gaming laptop with the AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX processor, NVIDIA RTX 3080 16GB dedicated graphics, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, a wide gamut 165Hz QHD display and an optical-mechanical keyboard. The laptop is edgy looking without being overly gamery (unless you activate the full array of RGB lighting) and it has a premium feel with unique design touches like a partially translucent keyboard deck and switchable hinge plate covers. This is a very powerful PC with the latest Zen 3 CPUs, but thermals are well controlled thanks to AMD’s chill processors, good cooling design and liquid metal thermal paste on the CPU. The laptop is available with Ryzen 7 5800H and Ryzen 9 5900HX CPUs, and NVIDIA RTX 3070 or 3080 graphics. It has two RAM slots, 2M.2 NVMe SSD slots, Wi-Fi 6, USB-C and a healthy selection of ports.
