Steven Shalita is VP, Pluribus Networks. He's seeing a new trend: his customers are using SDN with for cybersecurity and to hand untrusted traffic on the network. The challenge with networks today is most networks are mixed use, so we’re doing lots of things on them as we introduce the internet of threats-I mean the internet of things-we create more and more untrusted traffic into the network. I love the story of the fish tank in Las Vegas as an entry point to hack the casino. Anything you add to the network represents risk. And while we’re spending billions to secure the perimeter and identity access control, the challenge is what happens when those bad things get through, and they will get through. “How do you control the network environment, the application environment, to protect in case something makes it thru that defense. How do I keep it from proliferating, from moving laterally, how do I fundamentally reduce the attack surface within the network environment. How do SDN do it: “3:02 SDN is, in and of itself, next-generation networking. What makes it different than traditional networking is, It’s programmable. Everything about it can be defined using APIs, so not only can I integrate that into my security tools so the network and security tools can work together for a change, I also have the ability to control the functions the network is able to deliver. So by creating a software defined network I have more flexibility, more versatility in using the network as a defense layers. SDNetworking is simpler and gives you this agility to be able to address different operations requirements whether you’re implementing it as an overlay or it becomes THE network. SDN gives you, the security team as well as the network team more control to manage this traffic, to control this broad range of devices that are being connected to the network.” ------------------------------------ For the latest in cybersecurity news, follow SecureWorld: Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/company/106644/ Twitter: @SecureWorld Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SecureWorldExpo
