The idea of electron spin surely came by knowing the spinning of the earth about the axis which passes through its center. But there is lot of difference between the spin of an electron and spin of the earth. In this video Kewal Anand tried to explain the term in an easy way so that even a school student can understand the actual meaning of the spin. The spin of the earth is continuous can all its three components can be determined simultaneously whereas the spin of the electron is discrete, and we can not determine all three components at the same instant of time. We can just measure the value of spin of the electron about only one of the axes which we generally call Z-axis. When we skip the unit of the spin we call that spin quantum number,then multiplication of spin number with the reduced Plank's constant gives the value of spin angular momentum about one of the axes...
