Speaking in the Kremlin, President Putin congratulated Mr Trump, recalling his wish to improve US-Russia relations. He said there was a hard road ahead, considering the state of degradation they were at now. But he said good relations would serve the interests of global security as well as the Russian and American nations. Throughout his campaign, Donald Trump praised Mr Putin as a strong leader, hinting he might recognise Russia's annexation of Crimea and suggesting he would not necessarily defend NATO allies. Russia has always denied it had influenced the election result, insisting there was no proof Moscow carried out cyber attacks that weakened Hillary Clinton's campaign.
