Researchers collect tonnes of plastic from polluted island, but leave it all behind | ABC News

Two years ago, the world was shocked to learn that a Pacific island, completely cut off from human habitation, had become one of the most polluted places on the planet. Henderson Island quickly went viral and was described as "the poster boy for marine pollution" for being buried under 38 million pieces of plastic. The South Pacific island, a British territory and part of the Pitcairn archipelago, was given World Heritage status 30 years ago. Twelve researchers recently returned from a mammoth effort to clean up some of the rubbish, but they did not bear good news.
