Spending the holidays abroad is tougher than you think. The first couple years I was ok. I wasn't home sick much and I spent the holidays hanging out with friends and going out to a nice dinner. As the years went by and not being able to get home, I started to feel sad. I watch my parents age and my cousins grow up and I realized how much I was missing out on and how life can be just too short. Every holiday after those couple years I cried a lot. I started to search for familiarity and creating a day that reminded me of home. There will always be ups and downs living in Japan. There are more reasons than one why I love this country and why I live here but during times like these, you remember how things were growing up and need that sense of nostalgia in order to keep from forgetting where you came from and the love that is given from miles away. There is no shame in spending Christmas with others who are similar to you. If spending time with the locals makes you happy then do it! If spending time with other foreignors makes you happy then do it. There is no right or wrong and everyone is different.
