Children need to build their spoken language skills, understand that words are made of sounds and that letters are how we write the sounds, then learn the complex English spelling system and practise connections between sounds and letters in reading and spelling activities till these become fast and automatic, in order to be able to read fluently and with good comprehension, and write whatever they can say.
