Much of the popularity is due to how often they were recommended in recent years against similarly priced prosumer headphones, particularly Beats. The M50x served as a modest upgrade to the M50, including a removable cable and more comfortable ear cups. What truly makes these headphones fascinating in how many situations they are used in, and as a result how many people they are recommended to. These headphones can be seen being worn live my musical legends like Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, while simultaneously appearing on the desk of most respectable contestants in ‘Setup Wars”. Their favored by many gamers for their detailed sound in games, while simultaneously being the daily drivers of many audiophiles looking for an entry into the world of hi-fi sound. Today I’m asking how and why these headphones have remained so popular over the years, and with so many people from different backgrounds. More importantly, I’ll be examining if these still deserve the seemingly endless praise they have received in 2018. The M50x’s are first and foremost monitor headphones, designed to produce an accurate sound for recording, editing, and mastering audio. While their sound signature is not completely flat, it’s accurate to do something like edit and master voiceover tracks, my main use case for them. If you delve into the realm of mastering large multitrack workflows then studio monitors (in the speaker form) will generally prove a better option, but the M50x’s will do a much better job of allowing you to hear sounds the way they were actually recorded then any typical prosumer headphones or speakers. The balanced, high detail sound they put out has led to them being widely regarded as the best headphones under $200, and the perfect entry-level audiophile headphones. My daily driver headphones before I had these were the ATH M20x’s, the little brother to the M50s with significantly less detailed sound and lower build quality but ultimately great performers for $50. I stuck with those headphones for two years, considering them to be “good enough” for the kind of workload I had at the time which consisted primarily of editing voice over and videos. For music, when plugged into my Audient ID14 I considered them adequate performers. When I upgraded to the M50X’s in January, I immediately noticed significant improvements over my previous cans. As soon as I plugged them in and listened to a track of my one of my voice over recordings, I immediately noticed problems with the acoustics of the recording area that I simply didn’t notice on the M20s. When I decided to play some of my lossless files of the Bon Iver Album “22 A Million” I immediately noticed far more detail in the vocals, while at the same time considerably tighter bass. Listening to that album in lossless hi-fi quality with my new headphones, plugged into the DAC on my Audient ID14 was one of the most immersive listening experiences I’ve had to date.
