A figure 8 follow through knot is used when you need to attached a loop onto the rope securely. Obviously putting a loop in the rope and then trying to connect to the anchor point wouldn't work. Instead, you tie a figure 8 in the rope, loop it around the anchor point (most commonly a rock climber or rescue worker's harness) and then follow the original figure 8 through, to create the loop! It is an easy knot to remember once you have the figure 8 knot remembered and can be easily checked for safety. Learn to tie various knots!
