Spring hive management, splitting a hive without a queen. Subscribe for more beekeeping videos. The honey bee hives were split in early May this year, soon after drones were seen in the hives. New queens need drones from the area to be flying in order to mate, so this is why we wait to split the hives. Beekeepers can also purchase fertilized queens, or raise their own to introduce to their split colonies (which is what I do). In early June the colonies will be bursting with bees.
